As all advocates of feminist politics know, most people do not understand sexism, or if they do, they think it is not a problem. Masses of people think that feminism is always and only about women seeking to be equal to men. And a huge majority of these folks think feminism is anti-male. Their misunderstanding of feminist politics reflects the reality that most folks learn about feminism from patriarchal mass media.

Indeed, it seems “female issues”—workplace discrimination, underrepresentation in the media, economic inequality, single motherhood, gender-based violence, and countless issues relating to health and reproductive rights—are mostly ignored on The Daily Show, minus occasional nods to abortion, birth control, and Planned Parenthood (thanks in large part to “Women’s Issues” commentator Kristen Schaal). And on those occasions that issues of reproductive health are covered in-depth, it is often insulting, or from a conspicuously male perspective.

i was watching a special segment on t.v. about Gloria Steinam the other day, she really is a lovely woman. they took to the streets to ask young women what they thought of feminism, if they knew who she was, whether they think sexism is around or important these days, where we need it, etc etc.

Agree.

But why is it just white western women instead of just western women? Honest question. I’ve heard black western women (American) express the same sentiments.

Rape culture is victim-blaming. Rape culture is a judge blaming a child for her own rape. Rape culture is a minister blaming his child victims. Rape culture is accusing a child of enjoying being held hostage, raped, and tortured. Rape culture is spending enormous amounts of time finding any reason at all that a victim can be blamed for hir own rape.

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.” (I Corinthians 14:34-35)

I love how well she words things that, when I try to explain them, get all jumbled and rambley.

It’s not a privilege when it’s something practically forced on you because of your assigned gender. It wasn’t women who got together and decided “these things are ours and you men can’t have them otherwise you’ll be seen as weak/gay/a woman.”

Even if, hypothetically, women WANTED to for whatever reason, women have never had that type of social power available to them.
